What is the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP)?
The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is an evidence-based listening therapy designed to reduce sound sensitivities, improve auditory processing, and enhance social engagement. It uses specially filtered music to help regulate the nervous system and promote a sense of safety and connection.
Developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, author of Polyvagal Theory, the SSP is a non-invasive, acoustic vagal nerve stimulator that helps “retune” the nervous system, allowing individuals to better handle life’s challenges and improve their capacity for collaboration and resilience.
Cost Information
The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is offered as an add-on to therapy through various modalities, including individual therapy, telehealth, and group therapy. Typical rates include your regular therapy rate plus an additional SSP fee for setup, materials, and monitoring.
Typical Rates (please contact us for more details)
- Individual Therapy: Regular rate + SSP fee
- Telehealth: Regular rate + SSP fee
- Group Therapy: Rates to be determined (shared prior to enrollment)
Important Note on SSP Integration
The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a specialized therapeutic intervention designed to support emotional regulation and is not covered by insurance. Please feel free to ask any questions about how SSP may fit into your therapy plan or discuss financial concerns during consultation.
Headphones
The SSP is primarily designed to be delivered through over-the-ear headphones. These maximize vagus nerve stimulation and provide an immersive listening experience.
Recommendations
- Over-ear headphones for optimal results.
- Unyte headphones are available but not required.
- Bluetooth headphones may be used with minimal distance from the device.
What to Avoid
- Noise-canceling headphones unless the feature is turned off.
- On-ear headphones and earbuds, which provide limited vagus nerve input.
Precautions
Conditions to Monitor
- Psychosis: Do not deliver SSP if active psychosis is present.
- Seizures: Proceed cautiously if seizures are uncontrolled.
- Hearing Sensitivity: Begin with low volume and monitor closely.
