Unmet Needs: Building a Group That Goes Deeper

Why We Created Unmet Needs

For a while, I have wanted to create a group that does more than cover a topic for an hour, hand out a worksheet, and hope people can apply it on their own.

Unmet Needs grew out of conversations Sara and I have had about how often neurodivergent adults know what they are supposed to do but still do not have enough support to actually do it. Burnout, executive functioning, emotional regulation, sensory needs, relationships, money, and daily living do not stay in separate boxes. They pile on top of each other.

My ambition for this group is to bring together the depth of experience Sara and I have with neurodivergence and create something that hits a little harder than a traditional weekly skills group.

Sara has spent years helping neurodivergent people with executive functioning, education, employment, organization, and practical life skills. My work focuses more on neurodivergent-affirming therapy, burnout, emotional regulation, relationships, and the lived experience of neurodivergence. There is a lot of overlap between our work, but we also bring different perspectives.

That is why Unmet Needs meets twice a week. We want enough time and repetition to move past simply learning concepts. Participants will learn practical skills, talk honestly about what is not working, try new approaches, and come back a few days later to troubleshoot. We will cover executive functioning, burnout, emotional regulation, daily living, communication, self-advocacy, relationships, sensory needs, and other areas that often get overlooked.

We are trying to create the kind of group we wish was more widely available: practical, affirming, emotionally supportive, and built around the reality that knowing what to do and being able to do it are not the same thing.

Unmet Needs begins September 15 and meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30–8:00 p.m. for 10 weeks in Fort Collins. The group is open to adults with Medicaid who have ADHD, autism, or both. RMHP and NHP Medicaid are accepted.
